Foundation Seminars

Foundation Seminars are short-term, content-driven courses designed to help you grow in a particular area of interest or need. These seminars help us comprehend the subtle intricacies and overarching truths of our God and the theology, ministry and history He has authored. Foundation Seminars are styled as lectures and discussion, with occasional reading assignments outside of class. Our vision for Foundation Seminars is to help adults acquire a comprehensive Christian education resulting in spiritual growth and service to God and others. Foundation Seminars are offered periodically. The topics below show you the types of courses we offer.

 Church History
Understand your Christian ancestry

Fall Semester: The Reformation Dawns and Spreads

Despite the spiritual darkness of the Middle Ages and the doctrinal errors of the Roman Catholic church, the Reformation dawned and spread through the courageous efforts of faithful reformers such as Wycliffe, Hus, Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, and Knox. During this 26-week study, learn about the “5 Solas” of the Reformation and hear the stories of these great heroes of the faith as we take a historical tour of the Reformation through Europe, Great Britain, and ultimately to the shores of America.

Spring Semester: The Church in the Modern Age

As the Age of Reason and the Enlightenment gain traction in Europe, the church faces new challenges that still persist today. At the same time, the Holy Spirit builds the church through the Great Awakenings and the evangelistic efforts of men like John Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, George Whitefield, Charles Spurgeon, D.L. Moody, Billy Sunday, and Billy Graham. This 22-week study journeys from the 17th century to the current day and investigates the people and ideas that have shaped the modern church.

Growth and Development
Growing as a Christian leader

Leadership Essentials
Equipping Men and Women to Lead and Teach in the Church

Leadership in the church takes many forms. In addition to pastors, elders, and deacons, there are teachers, ministry coordinators and others who have positions of influence. All of these roles are critical for the church to effectively accomplish its mission.

For church leadership to be effective three things are required. First, the leaders must share a common vision, a set of core values, and must strive together as a team in advancing the mission of the church. Second, leaders need to be growing and developing both spiritually and in their leadership skills. Third, the existing leaders must be identifying, mentoring and training future leaders. Colonial is launching a new course to help us accomplish these things.

This leadership development course is for men and women who want to be better equipped to lead and teach in the church. This course will cover several important topics, such as:

  • A clear and concise biblical theology of New Testament leadership principles.
  • The roles and responsibilities of godly influencers.
  • The importance and implications of church leaders building their life on a biblical worldview.
  • The relationship between a leader's home and personal life, and his/her leadership role.
  • The distinctives, vision and values of Colonial Baptist Church and how leaders help advance the mission of this local church.
