Foundation Seminars

Foundation Seminars are short-term, content driven courses designed to help you grow in a particular area of interest or need. These seminars help us comprehend the subtle intricacies and overarching truths of our God and the theology, ministry and history He has authored. Foundation Seminars are styled as lectures and discussion, with occasional reading assignments outside of class. Our vision for Foundation Seminars is to help adults acquire a comprehensive Christian education resulting in spiritual growth and service to God and others. Foundation Seminars are offered periodically. The topics below show you the types of courses we offer.

 Church History

Church History is a class you can join anytime.  This class covers some of the major movements in the history of church doctrine. Themes include:

The Early Church to the Middle Ages

The early church era was a time of great persecution and widespread false teaching. Yet, God used this crucible to refine and build His church. During this period, the church developed important defenses of the faith, recognized the God-given canon of Scripture, and formulated key doctrinal statements to combat heresy. This 20-week study explores the foundations of the church and the development of the doctrines of the Christian faith that we share today. It concludes with a journey through the Middle Ages to set the stage for a follow-on study of the Reformation.

The Reformation Dawns and Spreads

Despite the spiritual darkness of the Middle Ages and the doctrinal errors of the Roman Catholic church, the Reformation dawned and spread through the courageous efforts of faithful reformers such as Wycliffe, Hus, Luther, Zwingli, Calvin, and Knox. During this 26-week study, learn about the “5 Solas” of the Reformation and hear the stories of these great heroes of the faith as we take a historical tour of the Reformation through Europe, Great Britain, and ultimately to the shores of America.

The Church in the Modern Age

As the Age of Reason and the Enlightenment gain traction in Europe, the church faces new challenges that still persist today. At the same time, the Holy Spirit builds the church through the Great Awakenings and the evangelistic efforts of men like John Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, George Whitefield, Charles Spurgeon, D.L. Moody, Billy Sunday, and Billy Graham. This 22-week study journeys from the 17th century to the current day and investigates the people and ideas that have shaped the modern church.
