Foundation Seminars

Foundation Seminars are short-term, content-driven courses designed to help you grow in a particular area of interest or need. These seminars help us comprehend the subtle intricacies and overarching truths of our God and the theology, ministry and history He has authored. Foundation Seminars are styled as lectures and discussion, with occasional reading assignments outside of class. Our vision for Foundation Seminars is to help adults acquire a comprehensive Christian education resulting in spiritual growth and service to God and others. Foundation Seminars are offered periodically. The topics below show you the types of courses we offer.

Leadership Essentials
Equipping Men and Women to Lead and Teach in the Church

Leadership in the church takes many forms. In addition to pastors, elders, and deacons, there are teachers, ministry coordinators and others who have positions of influence. All of these roles are critical for the church to effectively accomplish its mission.

For church leadership to be effective three things are required. First, the leaders must share a common vision, a set of core values, and must strive together as a team in advancing the mission of the church. Second, leaders need to be growing and developing both spiritually and in their leadership skills. Third, the existing leaders must be identifying, mentoring and training future leaders. Colonial is launching a new course to help us accomplish these things.

This leadership development course is for men and women who want to be better equipped to lead and teach in the church. This course will cover several important topics, such as:

  • A clear and concise biblical theology of New Testament leadership principles.
  • The roles and responsibilities of godly influencers.
  • The importance and implications of church leaders building their life on a biblical worldview.
  • The relationship between a leader's home and personal life, and his/her leadership role.
  • The distinctives, vision and values of Colonial Baptist Church and how leaders help advance the mission of this local church.

Rethinking God Biblically

Are we sure that the God we serve is the God described in Scripture? Is rethinking Him biblically really necessary? How do we do it? How would it affect our views of Christ, the gospel, holiness, worship, evangelism, service, and revival?

Behold Your God: Rethinking God Biblically is a 12-week multimedia study that focuses on God’s self-revelation in the Bible, helping you to apply the descriptions of God to all of life. This course was developed with the conviction that our fundamental need is to repent of our low and unworthy views of God, to return to the biblical descriptions of the true God, and to risk it all in order to live upon who He is. Nothing in this study is new truth. The devotions and exercises in the workbook and the intros, sermons, and interviews in the videos are meant only to help you to take the biblical descriptions of God seriously and to see how they form the foundation of Christian living.

There is a $15 workbook for this study. You can order a copy in advance or purchase one the first day of class. One per household will suffice.

The Weight Of Majesty

The Weight of Majesty is a 12-week study that builds upon the foundation set in "Rethinking God Biblically." The main theme is that God Himself is the great attraction of the Christian life. This course helps you go deeper into that theme.

Nothing is so satisfying for the true Christian as an ever-increasing and experiential knowledge of our God. This cannot be gained safely without diligently searching the Bible. This study will guide you back into those passages which contain some of the most significant descriptions of God. Your mind and your heart will come together as you bow before God in real worship and study.

There is a $15 workbook for this study. You can order a copy in advance or purchase one the first day of class. One per household will suffice.

Marriage Matters
Extraordinary change through ordinary moments

Using discussion questions, small group exercises, vignettes, Bible study, and relationship-building activities, this interactive course gives couples the invaluable experience of applying and living the principles from the book Marriage Matters.

He snapped at her at breakfast. She brought up a past mistake. He walked out angry. She left without saying good-bye. Just one day in an ordinary marriage. But what if things could be different? What if the ordinary moments of annoyance, conflict, pain, or cold indifference could become moments to understand God's incredible agenda for love and begin something new? This book offers a simple, yet powerful prescription for changing marriages one ordinary moment at a time.

Change begins with understanding how and why small disagreements evolve into major problems, taking practical steps to love one another more effectively, and learning how to take those same steps over and over again. Interactions that used to devolve into pointless annoyances and fights can become opportunities for God's love to become increasingly evident and powerful. Winston T. Smith takes abstract, biblical principles and applies them to the concrete details of life so that ordinary marriages can become extraordinary.
