Scott Wylie goes by many titles: husband, father, pastor, mayor, teacher, elder, headmaster, scout leader, director, woodworker, and techie. It depends on who you ask. Some know him by a couple of those titles, others know him by many.
For his wife, Lorie, one title is husband. Both Scott and Lorie were born and raised in the upper Midwest. Scott grew up in Bay City, Michigan. Lorie grew up in Iowa. After graduating from high school, Scott enrolled at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. He met Lorie while they were students at Moody. Scott said it took time and more than a few proposals, but, eventually, Lorie agreed to marry him. "Scott went through a lot of hoops to win my heart, including taking up jogging, becoming a beach-goer, and moving to Iowa,” said Lorie.
After graduating and marrying Lorie, Scott took on a title that he has held for more than twenty years now—pastor. He and Lorie moved to Michigan where Pastor Scott served as a youth pastor for six years. The lack of sunshine (according to somewhat suspect math, the Wylies once went ninety days straight without seeing the sun) and Pastor Scott’s desire to further his education led the Wylies to move to Deerfield, Illinois to attend Trinity Evangelical Divinity School. While there Pastor Scott earned his Master of Religious Education degree.
In 1995, Pastor Scott received a phone call from a church with a weekly attendance of 1100 in Cary, North Carolina. The church was looking for a children’s pastor. Excited about the opportunity, the Wylies headed south to join the growing ministry of Colonial Baptist Church.
Three years later, when his first son, Chad, was born Pastor Scott gained a new title—dad. Three years later his second son, Eric, was born. His family is a central part of Pastor Scott’s life. Anyone who spends time with him quickly notes his passion for spending time with his boys and his devotion to raising them to be Christ-followers.
There’s never a dull moment for the Wylie men. Their interests are varied, and you might find them doing just about anything together: taking a field trip with their homeschool co-op, visiting Civil War battlegrounds, shooting guns at a nearby shooting club, earning patches for Cub Scouts, watching a Hurricanes game, or reading a good book. "I like to wrestle with my dad. He always loses," said Eric. "My dad is a great dad. He's taught me a lot of things, like how to golf and fix a kitchen sink. He's an encouragement to me and I love him a lot," said Chad.
Other titles have been bestowed on Pastor Scott at Colonial. In 2003, he began the ministry of Colonial Corners. Corners is a town where the only citizens are fourth and fifth graders (and a few fortunate adults). Every good town needs a mayor. Who better than Pastor Scott? He has humbly served as the town’s leader since its founding.
Catching up with Pastor Scott during a typical week could be tough. Mondays, he’s a Scout Leader for a local chapter of Cub Scouts. Tuesdays, you might catch him checking in on Colonial’s Meadowlands Preschool—he’s the school’s headmaster. Wednesdays, he teaches a morning men’s Bible study. Thursdays, he’s an Apologetics teacher for high school students through Colonial’s Homeschool Academic Resource Center. Fridays, he can often be found in his office, under a pile of books, preparing for the upcoming week.
Even with so many titles, Pastor Scott’s focus never wavers. He became a children’s pastor for one reason. “I’m not concerned with programs. I’m concerned with helping parents with the spiritual nurturing of their children,” said Pastor Scott. Encourager—another title Pastor Scott holds. |
