I will praise you, O LORD, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies. Be exalted, O God, above the heavens, and let your glory be over all the earth. – Psalm 108:3-5
Sing a New Song, the much anticipated all-church worship service, led by Pastor David Loftis was a memorable experience for the church body at Colonial held Sunday, October 25. With the auditorium filled to near capacity, worshipers enjoyed a 90-minute time of praise including a total of thirteen songs. Unique about this event, was that most of the songs were written by Pastor Loftis himself. Many of his songs combine original verses with old, familiar words to create a new song of praise.
Carry the Weight, performed Sunday night, is a song written in memory of Paul Jackson, former Colonial Pastor of Adult Ministries and Pastor Loftis’ good friend, who went home to be with the Lord in 2002, after a courageous battle with cancer. Pastor Loftis told the congregation his story of how Pastor Jackson was instrumental in helping him feel at home when he was still Colonial’s new worship pastor. Carry the Weight was first performed at Pastor Jackson’s funeral and clearly moved worshipers who heard it for the first time Sunday night.
Many songs written by Pastor Loftis have been inspired by events in is own life, particularly the personal trials and struggles through which the Lord has guided him. Pastor Loftis and his family have seen their share of struggles recently. He had surgery last summer to remove nodules from his vocal chords and was unable to talk or sing during a period of his recovery. While Pastor Loftis was still recovering, his son, J.D., became gravely ill and spent time in the hospital before regaining his health. During Sunday’s service Pastor Loftis said, “I wasn’t sure I would get this voice back…when I did, I determined that I would give the Lord this [the New Song Worship Service] as my first fruits offering.”
The live recording of Sing a New Song will be available in January, distributed through David Loftis Worship Ministries (pre-orders can be made at www.davidloftis.com). The CD will allow listeners to experience once again the rich sounds of praise and adoration created Sunday night by Colonial’s worship team which included a 140-person choir and orchestra. Additional songs to be included on the album are By Faith written by Keith and Kristyn Getty and Psalm 29 by Jason Holdridge. Other CDs available through Colonial’s House of Praise include: Love Will Last, Sweet Heaven’s Child and To Be Like You.
You can have it all, not holding anything back
For You are the owner of everything;
Lord, I hear Your call to worship You with all I am
Take my heart, soul and mind,
Everything I can find is Yours –
You can have it all.
