When asked why he chose to play guitar for Colonial’s preschool and elementary children, Steve Black answered simply, “It was a good fit.” After years of experience strumming his acoustic guitar, Steve made a decision to use his talent “to serve God however possible.” And God was faithful to provide a window of opportunity.
When the current children’s worship leader decided to serve in another area, there was a need for someone to step in. Steve jumped at the opportunity. Now he can be found each Sunday, toting his instrument into rooms filled with a sea of wide-eyed children to joyfully lead them in song. Their songs reach beyond the four-walled classrooms and through heaven’s gates.
Steve’s service shows that teaching children the Word of God isn’t limited to storybooks; every childlike lyric he sings is like a pen writing the Word of God on their hearts. “I’d have to say, the best part is the hugs, the waves and the smiles both in the classroom and in the halls,” Steve said. For him, serving Colonial’s kids isn’t a sacrifice, but a pleasure.
Steve isn’t comfortable being singled out for his service and was quick to mention the volunteers who minister alongside him. The list includes: Nate Reak; Dave Ellyson; Kristan Handley; Amy and Steve Ims; and Ashley and Jason Rivenbark. Some lead an assembly time for young elementary students complete with music, visual aids and a short lesson. Some assist the lead musicians, allowing them the freedom to focus on just the music portion. Others travel from classroom to classroom or serve as alternates. “It’s not all about me, it’s a group effort,” Steve said, “and we could always use more help! If anyone wants to come, we’ll find something for them to do.”

Steve Black is living proof that God is glorified when ordinary people join together to use their gifts and talents for Him.
